Not even sardonic narration from the typically delightful Billy Crudup can save the noisy mess that is “Die in a Gunfight.” And guy, is there numerous it.

Schiffli’s snarky and snide self-conscious tone quickly grows wearisome, and his action sequences have a cheapness about them that’s distancing; they’re nearly laughable however in no way so-terrible-they’re-properly. His film is loaded with frenetic, incessant style on the lookout for substance; it's far a huge departure from the stark naturalism of his 2019 drama “All Creatures Here Below.” Meanwhile, the romance at its center—which in theory is meant to offer some kind of emotional core amid the shouting and the gunfire—has no spark. A half of-baked subplot involving an Australian assassin (Travis Fimmel) and his amorous lady friend (Emmanuelle Chriqui) is a chunk livelier—they’re swingers, so naughty!—but they sense greater like a group of quirks intended to shock us than actual humans. By the time Ben begins spouting banal platitudes approximately how he’s ill of anticipating his existence to begin, we’re more than prepared for the film to give up.
