A surfer in a swimsuit fights a shark: it seems like something a coked-up Hollywood executive would think of five minutes before a gathering. However The Shallows ends up being a totally good piece of Friday-night endurance frightfulness hokum, with a couple of shrewd wrinkles.
Chief Jaume Collet-Serra gives the film an aesthetic sheen: there are some clever visuals, including instant messages that spring up in mid-air and an early, fear prompting look at the executioner fish by means of outline as it skims through a wave on which the courageous woman is surfing.
